From WOLF to ALPHA: Plan of Action- Roadmaps to Success

Note: This is a quick reminder to start with my original post, entitled “The Beginning: Foundations of Perspective and Identifying the Worries of Our World” to follow my WOLF to ALPHA process in order. Enjoy and thanks for stopping by!

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery

We all have wishes and dreams of what our life could be, and hope they magically come true after blowing out the candles on our birthday cakes or flipping an old penny into the fountain at the local park, or as a shooting star darts across the night sky. Dreams and wishes are the doorways to the limitless possibilities of not just what could be, but what can be with the right plan of action.

According to a statistic provided by Dr.Ruth Gotian,(A link to her article is included below), 92% of us fail to reach our goals. Let that sink in for a moment. What separates the minority of us that actually achieve what they set out to accomplish? Perhaps a better question is, what are you willing to do, to commit to, and pursue tirelessly until you have it? I have no doubt that you would like to lose ten pounds, get that promotion, and save up for that stylish ranch home you have been eyeing to come on the market now for several years. Those are all admirable things to aspire to, but without setting aside time for developing a dietary plan and exercise program or investing in professional development to further your career and marketability or finally working out a budget that allows you to save for the home you disparately want, you are far less likely to make it a reality.

There are several different models for helping you to develop a goal and plan of action. The popular GROW model, created by Sir John Whitmore in the 1980s, and since developed by Graham Alexander and Alan Fine, stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and WILL. Essentially, you create a goal, determine a baseline for where you are at in respect to the goal, explore what materials, steps, and obstacles may be involved, and create a plan of action that you will commit to until you reach your destination. Another great resource is the S.M.A.R.T framework for goal setting. This framework helps to develop a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. In the activity below, I will provide you with examples of how to apply these tools.

Our activity for this phase of the process is entitled “A Goal Worth Pursuing.” You are going apply what you have learned about in this post and create your own measurable and obtainable goal!

Here are some positive affirmations created by Copilot, to help inspire you on your journey to reaching your goals and becoming an ALPHA. Remember to write down or recite these or your own affirmations at least 5 times a day!

  • “I am capable, committed, and in control of my success.”
  • I deserve success, and I am working toward it every day.”
  • I trust the process and celebrate my progress, no matter how small.”
  • “I am stronger than my excuses and more powerful than my doubts.”

If you took the time to develop a goal using the S.M.A.R.T framework, and apply it to the GROW model, you now have a written plan of action and are well on our way to making your dreams a reality! Next up as part of the “From WOLF to ALPHA” process, we will be looking at habits as part of the upcoming “Habits: Build to Last a Lifetime” post.
